Day One at the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair: What to Expect on the Floor

Day one of the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair has a particular energy. The Queen Sirikit National Convention Center fills with thousands of buyers from around the world, parcels of stones cross tables that were empty an hour earlier, and for five days this becomes the busiest room in the global gem trade. It is my favorite week of the year, and I spend it on the floor from open to close.

If you are coming, whether it is your first time or your fifteenth, this is the guide I wish someone handed people at the door. What the hall actually looks like, where to find what you came for, and what we are doing here all week: sourcing, networking, manufacturing, and hunting down the best material and equipment in the building. My family has worked this fair for over three decades, so let me walk you in.

The Hall at a Glance

First, orientation, because the floor is big and a little overwhelming until you understand how it is organised. Here is the layout, cleaned up to just the zones so you can find your way fast.

The hall reads left to right, from the Hall 1 side across to Hall 4. Coming in, the Diamond section sits on the left. Next to it, the large Fine and Gold Jewelry zone, the biggest area on the floor. Then Silver Jewelry through the centre. After that a strip of Costume and Fashion Jewelry, Findings, Display, and Synthetic Stones, and right beside it the Lab-Grown Diamond zone, which is where you will find us and the material I care about most. Continue right and you reach International Jewelry, then Equipment, Tools and Machinery along the far side, with a Premium Pavilion in the top corner and large Prestige pavilion booths running along the front. Registration and the Hall entrances line the front edge, with the Press Center up in the top-left.

What to Expect as a Buyer

If this is your first serious fair, here is the honest texture of the day. It is a trade event, so it moves at trade pace. Deals happen quickly, parcels come out, prices are discussed plainly, and the people who do well are the ones who arrive with a clear idea of what they want.
